SUSTAINABLE PRODUCTS

DESIGNING PRODUCTS THAT PUT PEOPLE, ANIMALS AND THE PLANET FIRST.

CHOICES ARE POWERFUL

What materials we choose to create our products, where they come from, how we treat people and animals… it all matters.

We’re on a mission to use lower-impact materials across our product range and put people, the community and the planet first. Our Sustainable Product impact area is also all about helping you to love your wardrobe for longer - one of our six approaches to circularity.

Princess Polly is a participant of the United Nations Global Compact, and has aligned our Earth Club mission with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). Within our Sustainable Products impact area, we are focused on two Sustainable Development Goals where we believe we can best contribute to:

Ensure sustainable consumption and production patterns
Protect, restore and promote sustainable use of terrestrial ecosystems, sustainably manage forests, combat desertification, and halt and reverse land degradation and halt biodiversity loss

OUR COMMITMENT:

We’re on a mission to use lower-impact materials across our product range and put people, the community and the planet first.

Today, Princess Polly uses six main materials in all our products; polyester, cotton, viscose, metals, nylon and acrylic. We are committed to working with our supply chain to source lower-impact alternatives for each of these materials, and to certify our main factories to create lower-impact products.

In March 2021 we released our first Princess Polly Earth Club Edit made from lower-impact materials, including organically grown cotton and recycled polyurethane. This is only the start - we’re excited to continue using additional lower-impact and certified materials in our products.

In 2021, we will release our Princess Polly Earth Club Material Guidelines with more detail on exactly which materials we define as more sustainable, how we will track this target, and our progress to date. We are aiming to have over 20% of our products made with lower-impact materials by 2022, 60% by 2025, and 100% before 2030. Lower-impact materials are one of six ways we promote circularity and aim to reduce our carbon footprint too.

DEMAND DRIVEN FASHION

At Princess Polly, we've helped pioneer a new fashion manufacturing model that we call Demand Driven fashion. Typically, the fashion industry orders products 6 months to a year in advance, without knowing what will sell and how much inventory to keep. This leads to unwanted, wasted stock.

With our close factory relationships, we are able to produce products with a short lead time of 3-6 weeks. This allows us to manufacture our products in small quantities based on customer demand, and avoid the environmental burden of overproduction. We aim to use our Demand Driven fashion model, combined with lower impact, more sustainable materials to produce the best overall outcome for our planet.

MADE FROM MATERIALS THAT DON’T COST THE EARTH

We’re dedicated to increasing our range of products made from more sustainable materials. You’ll discover new pieces made from lower-impact materials such as recycled polyester, recycled nylon or organically grown cotton every month.

EARTH CLUB

Being sustainable shouldn’t mean it costs more. Our mission has always been to make on-trend fashion accessible. As we continue to produce more lower impact products, we are committed to keeping our pricing the same where possible.

HERE ARE SOME MATERIALS WE’RE PRIORITIZING. NOT SURE WHY THEY’RE A BIG DEAL? LET’S BREAK IT DOWN REAL QUICK.

ORGANICALLY GROWN COTTON is grown using less water and without the use of non-organic pesticides, herbicides and fertilizers

RECYCLED POLYURETHANE is a synthetic leather made using a recycled polyester backing, meaning a waste product was given a new life. It’s all Global Recycled Standard certified too!

RECYCLED COTTON (Global Recycled Standard certified cotton) made partially from recycled cotton fibers, again giving a second life to cotton which would have been thrown away

RECYCLED NYLON (Global Recycled Standard certified) made from recycled plastics while also diverting waste from landfill.

RECYCLED POLYESTER (Global Recycled Standard certified and Repreve® certified recycled polyester) made from single-use plastic bottles.

RECYCLED PLASTIC (Recycled Claim Standard certified) finding new life for waste by recycling plastic into our accessories such as sunglasses

RECYCLED METAL (Recycled Claim Standard certified) made from a combination of recycled zinc, brass and iron creating a lower impact on our planet.

CUTE FASHION, MINUS ANY CRUELTY

We love animals, which is why we’re super serious about animal cruelty. We’re a Fur Free Retailer and have worked with Four Paws, a global animal welfare organization, to prepare our Animal Welfare Policy. Our animal welfare policy sets out our expectations around animal welfare for our employees and suppliers, and covers the animal derived materials we ban and allow, animal testing, and the inclusion of animals in our marketing.

For the animal materials that we do still work with, we require suppliers to practice good animal husbandry, and adopt the Five Freedoms of animal welfare by the Farm Animal Welfare Council. Currently, less than 1% of Princess Polly’s products are derived from animal products, and by 2023 all our apparel will be vegan by phasing out wool, leather and silk. We’ve already launched a Vegan Edit, where all the Princess Polly products are Peta-Approved Vegan.

CARING FOR OUR CLOTHES

At Princess Polly, we’re proud that our garments are made from high quality materials – which means that with a bit of TLC, attention to the labels and some smart laundry hacks, you can keep your fav pieces looking fresh and fab, season after season (the planet will thank you, too!).

To help you care for your Princess Polly pieces correctly and sustainably, we’ve created the Princess Polly Care Guide below, as well as a more in-depth post on our blog.

WHAT’S COMING UP:

  • Launch our Princess Polly Earth Club material guidelines and create a dashboard to track our material use
  • Create a capsule of vegan products which are also made from more sustainable materials
  • Understand the environmental impact of caring for our products, and grow our resources for customers to empower them to use their products sustainably and keep their products longer
  • Transition all apparel to be 100% vegan by phasing out wool, leather and silk. Currently, less than 1% of Princess Polly’s products are derived from animal products, and by 2023 all our apparel will be vegan.
  • At least 60% of all materials in our products will be more sustainable in line with our Earth Club Guidelines
